WITTY KNITS

TWINKLE, TWINKLE: KNITTING STAR

It's almost chilly enough to dive into this season's chunky knit sweater trend, and designer Wenlan Chia, of Twinkle by Wenlan, is giving lessons.  Last night, at the Anthropologie Flagship store in NYC's Rockefeller Plaza, Wenlan hosted an exclusive knitting instruction event.

Everyone from beginner to advanced toiled away on a project straight from the Twinkle book, Big City Knits

About 100 guests turned out for the event and sipped Farnum Hill hard cider and munched on minis -- finger-friendly BLTs and veggie and chicken burritos -- as they worked on their pieces des resistances.

SPIED: SUPER-DARK NAILS

Remember last year's Chanel Black Satin mania?  Chanelblacksatinnailpolish_9f6953a7 This was the nail polish hue that promptly sold out across the country, was peddled on Ebay for outrageous sums, and inspired even the most ladylike among us to embrace their inner Goths.

The expected fashion backlash would be a return to more delicate colors; perhaps a carryover of metallics from Spring; or at least a jump to vivid brights, in keeping with one of the season's biggest clothing and accessory trends.

But, trendsetters are still going to the dark side this season, with nearly-black shades that upon closer inspection are variations of deep purple, midnight blue and even forest green (I dug out an old favorite from Urban Decay called Mildew) -- most have a bit of a shimmer effect which makes them oddly glam.

I checked in with the veritable grande dame of nail polish, Essie Weingarten, and she confirmed my theory:

“Super-dark nail colors are hot this season, but the shades are less severe and easier to wear. The new dark colors have undertones of purple, chocolate and wine.”

SPIED! STATEMENT EARRINGS

BIG TREND ALERT
Super long -- often shoulder-grazing -- "look-at-me" earrings.  These are not the chandelier earrings we all loved for WAY too long back in 1997.  These new danglers have a significantly more glamorous appeal.

Sasha Primak, who crafted the diamond gems for It-Girl designer Erin Fetherston's Spring runway collection in New York City, told StyleSpy: "It is a pleasure to see women changing their jewelery statement to earrings.  This trend reflects a woman's confidence as bold diamond earrings emphasize femininity and frame a face beautifully. The revival of diamonds and heirloom-inspired earrings is reminiscent of the Hollywood stars from the glamorous 1940's."

SEEN IN DESIGNER SHOWROOMS COAST TO COAST:

And from Erickson Beamon in New York City, colored Swarovski crystals surround a 24-karat gold vermeil grill (below) -- perfect for the glam bohemian.

THIS FALL: NEW YORK TAXIS IN BLOOM

Having just come off the very groovy 40th anniversaries of the release of The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band album, the onset of the "Summer of Love" (commemorated by the Whitney Museum's Summer of Love: Art of the Psychedelic Era installation and a special exhibit at The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame), as well my parents' 40th wedding anniversary (although the only flower power at the original event was my mom's lily of the valley bouquet) -- I was looking forward to a flower-free autumn, sans psychedelia.

And then I spied it during New York fashion week pulling up outside the Narciso Rodriguez show:  A yellow New York City taxicab made even brighter by the large, electric-hued flowers painted on the hood and trunk.  My first reaction: Fashion Week stunt.

Nycflowercab3Nycflowercab4

Weeks passed, and I saw more and more and more of these cabs.  Despite having OD'd on flower power, I became obsessed.

Perhaps the taxi art was a continuation of the Summer of Love celebration?  I can see it now: The Fall of Love!...hmmm, or perhaps not.

Then I went to see Across the Universe, the deliciously visual and visceral musical based primarily on Beatles songs and lyrics, through which Director Julie Taymor recasts the turmoil and loss of innocence associated with the late 60s.  Ha!  I figured it out. I wanted to congratulate someone in Hollywood for their brilliant guerilla marketing strategy -- all those groovy cabs surfacing just before the
movie release...clever. (Check out the trailer!)

So, just to prove myself correct, I did some research.  Oops.  Apparently I was having my own idealistic hallucinations.  Turns out these bouquet cabs are part of a project called Garden in Transit.  According to Gothamist:

"It's a mobile public art project to help 'celebrate the 100th anniversary of New York's first traditional metered taxicab.' The decals were painted by 23,000 children and adults from organizations around New York City. Portraits of Hope, the organization behind Garden in Transit, was started as a creative therapy program for seriously ill and physically disabled children, but has expanded to include children and adults that participate through various organizations like schools and hospitals. The organization reports that 90% of participants in Garden in Transit are from NYC public schools, hospitals and youth programs."

Well, I happen to think the Garden In Transit taxis are FABULOUS.  I love the pop art quality mixed with the urban street art vibe. Plus the cartoonish style reminds me of Takashi Murakami's technicolor artwork.  Even
better, this stylish project is quirky (one of StyleSpy's highest compliments) and well-intentioned.

POWER TO THE FLOWERS!

*CULTURE NOTE:  There will be a Takashi Murakami exhibit at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, October 29, 2007 through February 11, 2008.

*RISK-TAKER NOTE:  All taxi images were taken while I was riding on the back of a Vespa.  Yup.  StyleSpy lives on the edge.

SPIED: CELEB SUBWAY STYLE

I apologize in advance for not taking a photo, but I felt way too dorky snapping my digital in someone's face.  Anyway, I shared a subway ride with AMANDA PEET on the uptown 1 train.  I was all decked out in my high heels, pencil skirt and oversized shades, and there's the lovely new mom sitting with a script on her lap, with zero make-up, hair casually up, wearing comfy running sneakers, and a jacket tied around her waist.  She looked like a fresh-faced kid.  Lesson learned?  We don't always need to try so hard to look stylish, it often comes naturally.  For a study in contrasts -- and because it's an amazing shoot -- check out Amanda in all her fashionable glory in our "That's Rich" feature in the October issue of InStyle.

PHILLIP LIM IN STEP WITH TATAMI

Looking ahead to SPRING '08...Skip the flip-flops (I know it's difficult, but you can do it), and step it up in a pair of chic, mold-to-your-sole (and perhaps even to your soul if you really love them) sandals. White-hot designer Phillip Lim has teamed up with German shoe company Tatami to create nine styles of women's sandals (and four for the guys).  According to the press release, Lim "infused the sandal designs with the perfect amount of 'unfashionability' and distinct 3.1 phillip lim characteristics to create a look that is understatedly unique and effortlessly cool."  In other words, if you like the quirky-meets-sophisticated vibe, these babies are made just for me...I mean, you.  Prices start at $150.

LIFE = STYLE

Just in case you were wondering...

"WHAT IS STYLE, ACCORDING TO STYLESPY?"

OR

"WHY IS THE KAWS STORY BELOW RELEVANT TO STYLESPY?"

As you get to know StyleSpy, you'll discover that my vision of style extends beyond fashion.  Style is personal -- sure it's about what you wear and how you wear it.  But it's also about art, design, cuisine, travel, beauty, music, technology, pop culture -- anything and everything with which you surround yourself.  Ultimately, style is about how you live and experience your life.

A GOOD KAWS

On Emmys Eve, while I was having dress drama in Beverly Hills, my trusty StyleSpy sidekick (that would be my husband Brant) was hanging with the hipsters in Williamsburg, Brooklyn at a joint called Saved Tattoo on Hope Street.  He was there because my favorite street artist KAWS was co-hosting a group exhibition. I already own several rare KAWS character figures (like the kind you find at KidRobot or on the KAWS website if you're lucky).  In fact, Brant's date for the evening was my vinyl KAWS Bearbrick toy from 2002.  Truth be told, I have been obsessed with meeting the man himself and having him personally sign one of his creations.  And, on this night, one of those dreams came true.  CHECK IT OUT!

ORIGINAL FRONT:

CUSTOMIZED (!!!) BACK:
In addition to the dedication and autograph, he drew a cute little face on the back of my Bearbrick's head.

My sleuthy husband also learned that KAWS used to live on the Lower East Side in Manhattan (where -- scandal! -- many of his original building tags have since been painted over), but he just so happened to have lived IN THE SAME BUILDING WE LIVED IN.  He even lived on the same floor.  We missed him by about a year.  For those of you thinking "big deal," imagine learning that you almost neighbored Andy Warhol or Jeff Koons or Picasso.

LEARN MORE ABOUT KAWS AND READ HIS BLOG (it's smart and charming) http://blog.honeyee.com/kaws/

p.s.
I am currently lusting after the limited edition Original Fake x Nexus7 400% Bearbrick that debuted in May and sold out within hours of its release, despite its $500 price tag.  It has since been listed on Ebay for up to $1000.

And finally, just beKAWS (har har):  here's a snap of the new KAWS 4-FOOT COMPANION (first posted by KAWS on his blog).  I have a 12" pink version (with bunny ears) in my office who I think needs a new friend...
