Making Scents of Summer

Scents, like songs, can transport you to a distant time or place.

One of the best souvenirs to score from a favorite destination -- especially a beachy one -- is a fragrance that sparks your senses and takes you back to that cherished place with a single sniff.

Whenever I long for Rehoboth Beach (my childhood seaside paradise), I splash on a few drops of the rugged Chesapeake Bay Spyce men's cologne that I bought at Carlton's, the old-school resort clothier on Rehoboth Avenue.  (The same company, Coastal Fragrance, also offers a version called Seaport, which does wonders reminding me of home when I'm away from home).

High on Rehoboth: Chesapeake Bay Spyce cologne

Bond No. 9 bottles the essence of the Hamptons, Fire Island (my pick for sexiest scent!), Coney Island and Manhattan (dubbed Eau de New York), in their New York beaches collection (they recommend storing the bottle in the fridge for maximum cooling sensation).

Endless Summer: Bond No. 9's New York Beaches fragrances make the memories last

Even if you're landlocked, pretend you're not with Restoration Hardware's "shore" cleaning collection.  I use the laundry softener and surface cleaner all year long, and it makes household chores less of a chore.

And leave it to Jonathan Adler to conjure a series of candles inspired by some of his most beloved getaways (and mine!  Mr. Husband and I have spent many a lazy afternoon sipping Domaines Ott at Sunset Beach on Shelter Island!)...

What's your favorite scent memory?  If you've found it bottled or in wax form, let me know!

I have a passion of perfumes, and I also run a small perfumes sales business. I look
around for posts like yours so I can keep myself updated. I consider the scent of perfumes
as an art because every perfumes' scent is unique in its own way just like an artist
paints unique pictures. I even run my own blog for perfumes.

This is totally unrelated to any of the post, but I have been looking for trendy inexpensive wide barrel bangles. The problem is that I have wide hands and knuckles and can never get a bangle over them. I have tried the stretchy ones and the clamp ones, but I like the big bangle ones that EVERYONE is wear, but me of course. Any suggestions of designers

PLEASE HELP!!!

I saw Katrina Szish on the Early Show on June 6 showing what to wear to work. I'm sorry I cannot get the dress she showed out of my head. Does anyone know what it was or where to get it?

Hi! May I put in my two scents?
1. This blog makes more scents than any I have ever seen!
2. Your scents of fashion is fantabulous!
Keep up the GREAT job.

Whenever I'm around my man, and he's wearing NoBs Alpha Male Fighter, I think dirty thoughts; he smells delicious, but is still all man.

Katrina is so right. We at Carltons have many customers that come to refill their stock of our "beachy" fragrances. To a tee, they all mention that they are reminded of their vacation, long weekend or childhood in Rehoboth Beach every time they wear one of our unique fragrances. Scent, one of five senses, is vastly overlooked in its memory provoking abilities. Great article, Katrina.

Because I'm still 14 at heart...nothing says "sexy" like Drakkar Noir. It is still, hands-down, my favorite men's cologne. If I walk through a department store and find myself in need of a pick-me-up, I will spritz some into the air and pretend my 10th-grade-crush is smiling at me.
