The Hottest Celeb Accessory: Athletes as Arm Candy

I find the tabloids' latest bombshell, the rumored affair between Madonna and Yankee third baseman Alex Rodriguez, aka A-Rod, interesting only because of the professions of those involved: mega-celebrity and star athlete.

Whether or not there is truth to the rumor (Madonna denied the allegations in an official statement on Sunday), this illuminates the trend of Hollywood A-listers dating pro athletes.

Have leading men lost their mojo?  Have musicians gotten musty?

Eva Longoria Parker is celebrating her one-year wedding anniversary with hoops star Tony Parker (check out our gallery!).

Gisele and QB Tom Brady are possibly the most beautiful couple on the planet (sorry Brad and Angie).

Watch out Brangie! Tomele has arrived

Hilary Duff's romance with hockey star Mike Comrie continues to sizzle.

Kate Hudson and Lance Armstrong's "friendship" appears to be heating up.

Jessica Simpson and Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo are still going strong.

Victoria's Secret supermodel Adriana Lima was recently taken off the market by basketballer Marko Jaric.

What is it with athletes (besides their bods and bankroll)?  Is their brand of celebrity less threatening to red carpet regulars?  Are they in the limelight just enough, but not too much to overshadow the starlets?  Or is it just a relief to date outside the industry?  Or am I over-thinking this?!

I'll say:
(C) They are in the limelight just enough, but not too much to overshadow the starlets.

I would add that because the male athletes are making an entrance into the celeb world, unlike their immersed female counterparts, there are fewer strategic compromises and personal/professional entanglements. The roles of the hostess and hosted are clearer in this entree.

Seems like a pretty good recipe, so... nice dish Katrina!!

It's true, but could they be any less stable if you're in the market for a commitment? I mean, talk about a girl in every port! The only exception I think (so far): Tiger. He seems like a real man. And maybe Sampras.

However, I have to agree about the hotness factor.

Agreed, Katrina - why do we spend so much time caring about people whose professions center on what we thought was cool in highschool??? By the way totally IN AWE of you on The View today - you looked beautiful!

more stable then actors? less roller-coasters?

better abs and less spoiled then actors?

WOW! Your insightful observation of the plethora of entertainment divas and athletic jocks joining forces is fantabulous! I feel the reason for the phenomenon is that the egos are divergent. Strong women striving for individual stardom with strong men striving for a starring team. Sounds like a winning combination. Great blog!

I think size matters. If you really look pound for pound at a musician or actor, they're not big. Tom Cruise pushes 5ft 7 on a good day, Pete Wentz, fall out boy, buck 50 in weight, Ashlee could kick his butt, Ironman is only 5ft 9 (if you believe him) and the list goes on. The height, body build and dedication to their craft and the ability to watch them on TV or sidelines, must have a huge draw. Regardless, athletes, supermodels, Hollywood a-listers will all have their fidelity flaws and ego’s to match, if dating outside their genre makes them happy, go for it. The worst part, when they fall, the world knows about it, right Chipper Jones, how many Hooter’s jokes do you hear daily?

whats more manly than playing sports for a living and making a living by staying in shape?
There is something inherently wholesome about a guy who is just being an athlete and not putting on a whole show--as often the rock stars and actors are and has a day job that demands a lot of dedication and hard work.

while this isn't an absolute--there is just as much bad behavior among athletes as among musicians and actors but they do have a slight edge in the physical category that seems to be working to their advantage right now among the ladies.

OMG, how could I forget my favorite couple!!

Thanks for pointing out the glaring absence of Posh and Becks!!

Nah, it's just the rockin' bods.

Or maybe that's just that I have started to fancy my trainer....

Either way, very refreshing and open minded of the stars to widen their nets. Soon, us advertising execs will be the hot new accessory. When that happens: George Clooney - call me!

you forgot David & Victoria Beckham!!!

Less threatening . . . and possibly longer-lasting.
