Michelle O Is No Jackie O Clone

There are some striking similarities between the First Family-elect and the legendary Kennedy family -- youth, energy, style, beauty, hope...but Michelle O is not merely Jackie O two-point-0.

Admittedly, when we first met Michelle on the campaign trail she did recycle myriad Jackie-isms -- the pearls, the flip, the sheath dress -- but she has since come into her own.

Michelle has become a fashion risk-taker, clearly evidenced by her much-debated dress choice on Election Night.  She is also a modern mixer of high and low: she slips into head-to-toe J. Crew (left) as easily as she slips into a Thakoon runway frock (right).

Michelle Obama wears J. Crew on Jay Leno Michelle Obama in Thakoon

She is a study in subtlety, yet she is far from a fashion wallflower.  Her choices are bold but not loud, strong but still feminine.  She is becoming a style icon -- quickly -- and stands poised to inspire a new generation of women.

Is the Obama White House going to be the new Camelot?  Perhaps.
However the queen of the castle is undoubtedly going to rewrite her own fashion history.

DEAR STYLE-SPY,
I want you to know how much I appreciate your cutting edge blog. Your first exposition of MO's designer was unbelievable. Does the media know that you were the first? I am sooo happy that I found this insightful site. Please, never go away.

I don't think the outfit is BAD, but it definitely won't stand the test of time that Jackie O's classic looks did. I also think she'd have looked better without the sweater.

I think our new first lady to be has wonderful taste and carries herself very well.

Michelle Obama is her own person and her style is her own.

Michelle Obama's dress is classy and attractive.I think she looks more sophisticated with Black and white combination with hairdo up.

If Sarah Palin (not Tina Fey)wore that dress what would be your comment also?

You bet yah...! Everyone knows the difference!

I saw nothing wrong with Michelle Obama's dress on Nov. 5th. She looked very classy, in fact, the whole family matched very well. By the way, what makes a fashion expert an expert? I think what a person likes and how it fits is fine for anyone. K. Richardson

Please step back from the Obama bandwagon and remove the rose colored glasses. MO has much to learn about what to wear. As a large woman she needs to dress to appear narrower. Some of her choices show no understanding of line, with especially poor neck choices. The election dress with modesty adjustments did little for her figure, appears twisted and off center. Stop worrying about being PC and don't crown her yet. It's far too early to say she is setting trends. Time will tell. Give her that time and then comment.
