I See London, I See France...

...I see eco underpants!

Eco Boudoir, based in London, offers sexy little things that are green and gorgeous.  A perfect gift for the yoga-loving bride...or for you.

Their philosophy: "Eco-Boudoir uses fabrics that are highly renewable and which do not bring pollution to people or the environment in their processing. We challenge the Eco-market in terms of design and branding and challenge the luxury market in terms of sustainability. We have made eco 'sexy'."

Just had to share.

Adult Toys Are A Big Turn-On For Style Lovers

As a big fan of all things POP, I am always mesmerized by products inspired by POP-CULTURE and POP-ART that boast both form and function -- particularly when said products look like kids' toys.

I suppose for many these products do double as kids' toys, but due to their inherent functionality, I also consider them "adult toys" (in the most innocent way, of course; but that headline got your attention, didn't it?)

Take a look at three I'm currently coveting:

1. TOY WATCH'S NEW NEON PLASTERAMIC, $195

Like a swankier Swatch (my all-time favorite), Toy Watch nods to the neon trend with this bright series.  Considering the continuation of the all-things-colorful trend, TheCoolhunter.net makes a wise observation: "..the Toy Watch could be the new RayBan Wayfarer."

Time to Glow: Toy Watch Plasteramic Series

2. DREAM KITTY'S SOLAR-POWERED HELLO KITTY CHARGING STATION, $159.99

This 5x3-inch, eco-friendly charger powers to full capacity after 6 hours in the sunlight, or after about 1 hour plugged-in.  Charge computers, cameras, cell phones and MP3 players.  The charger even has a built-in LED that provides 48 hours of interrupted light.

3.  MIMOBOT USB FLASH DRIVE, from $39.95

Launched in 2005 by mimoco (MEE-mo-co), these limited edition artist-designed flash drives carry all the typical tech-y stuff (files, pictures, documents, presentations) without making you yawn --- or yearn for something chic.  There's something very Gwen Stefani/Harajuku Lovers about these cute little pals...I like the stripes and bears, but there's also a Princess Leia version for those truly pop-culture obsessed.

Shoe of the Week: Dior Extreme Cutout Sandal

You've already seen them in the Sex and the City movie, but wouldn't it be more fun to see them on your feet?

I recently had the sheer and utter pleasure of road-testing the metallic snakeskin version of these vertiginous,
gutsier-than-gladiators spikes for a television shoot (to air in October...stay tuned for more details) and at my favorite NYC haunt, the Rusty Knot.  On both occasions, they drew oohs and aaahs.  One sole-sister even ran down the street to tell me that she had been desperately seeking the black ones.

Well, here they are:

Sample Sales: Smart or for Suckers?

It's sample sale season!

Yet ever since the Chanel sample sale went the way of the cassette tape, my heart just hasn't been in it.  How can you top $200 iconic bags and runway shoes for $50?   (Never mind sitting on the floor next to Kevin Aucoin at 7:30am waiting for the doors to open).

But alas, many years have passed since the golden days of sample sales (I still wear wares I scored at Fendi, Prada, Hermes and Chloe in the Stella days), and my wardrobe is in need of some sprucing.  So, I decided to indulge a bit this season.

Just a bit, mind you.  Recession, duh.  So far I have missed more sales (Catherine Malandrino, Jimmy Choo, Chloe and Rebecca Taylor) than I have attended.  That said, I have purchased a $500 Diane von Furstenberg skirt for $80 and a 3.1 Phillip Lim belt -- that I happen to be wearing right now --- for $50 (originally $200).

And today I actually stood outside in 98-degree heat for two and a half hours to get into the Tory Burch sample sale.***

Tory Burch: sample sale draws hundreds before doors open

Yup.  Two and a half hours.  By the time I finally entered, 300+ serious shoppers had beaten me inside.  I'm still debating whether it's better to be one of the first ones (or hundreds in this case) in the door and deal with the chaos, or if it's preferable to meander in after the crowds and miss the best selection.

Anyway, the doors opened at 10am, and Mr. Husband and I drove up at 9:50am (already sweating -- we rode the Vespa; helmets are hot!).  The line was already nearly a city block long.   We figured that once the doors opened, we'd sail right on inside.  At 10:30, when sample security (no joke) warned hundreds of sweaty shoppers that they would be in line for at least two hours, we stayed (and even chuckled a bit).  We thought it would be like waiting for a table at The Spotted Pig -- they tell you it'll be two hours, and you're seated within 30.  We did not have the last laugh.

Today's sample sale-ers were on a mission.  People carried empty Louis Vuitton duffles and extra-large LL Bean tote bags.  They brought bottled water and then bought more from an entrepreneurial gentleman who walked the block with cold bottles in plastic bags.  They kept a keen eye on the queue...if anyone sidled up and tried to cut, they instantly called her out and scolded her (although one entertainment show producer managed to slide by unnoticed by everyone but Style Spy).  Now that's what I call the Fashion Police.  The shoppers uniform of choice was a cotton jersey sundress, flip-flops, hair pulled up with a clip, and oversized sunglasses (I had a long time to be observant).

Treasure from Tory: I got this Dermott kaftan for $115

In the end, I walked away with $900 of merchandise for $290 (including this kaftan).

My question to you, fair fashion friends, is:  Are sample sales worth the hassle?

PS
So far the best sample sale of the season was the Jonathan Adler warehouse sale in Jersey City -- it was almost reminiscent of the Chanel deal days.  Except, of course, I didn't buy anything to wear...

***The Tory Burch sample sale is being held at 261 West 36th Street and continues through Saturday, June 14th.   Call 212.947.8748 for more info.

Making Scents of Summer

Scents, like songs, can transport you to a distant time or place.

One of the best souvenirs to score from a favorite destination -- especially a beachy one -- is a fragrance that sparks your senses and takes you back to that cherished place with a single sniff.

Whenever I long for Rehoboth Beach (my childhood seaside paradise), I splash on a few drops of the rugged Chesapeake Bay Spyce men's cologne that I bought at Carlton's, the old-school resort clothier on Rehoboth Avenue.  (The same company, Coastal Fragrance, also offers a version called Seaport, which does wonders reminding me of home when I'm away from home).

High on Rehoboth: Chesapeake Bay Spyce cologne

Chesapeake Bay Spyce cologne, $30 at Sportys.com

Bond No. 9 bottles the essence of the Hamptons, Fire Island (my pick for sexiest scent!), Coney Island and Manhattan (dubbed Eau de New York), in their New York beaches collection (they recommend storing the bottle in the fridge for maximum cooling sensation).

Endless Summer: Bond No. 9's New York Beaches fragrances make the memories last

Bond No. 9 beaches collection, $125 per 50ml bottle at BondNo9.com

Even if you're landlocked, pretend you're not with Restoration Hardware's "shore" cleaning collection.  I use the laundry softener and surface cleaner all year long, and it makes household chores less of a chore.

Shore Thing: Scented cleaning products from Restoration Hardware

And leave it to Jonathan Adler to conjure a series of candles inspired by some of his most beloved getaways (and mine!  Mr. Husband and I have spent many a lazy afternoon sipping Domaines Ott at Sunset Beach on Shelter Island!)...

I'm Feeling Knot-ty

Milly S/S 2008Jump for: Joie sandals

Gurkees Tobago sandals Jonathan Adler Ropes wallpaper

Clockwise from top left:  Milly by Michelle Smith, Spring 2008 collection; Joie sandals, $245 at ShopBop; Jonathan Adler "ropes" wallpaper, $195/roll at Jonathan Adler; Gurkees Tobago rope sandals, $28 (!), at Gurkees

I love anything with nautical rope accents, and I'm only placing partial blame upon NYC's new(ish) nautical haunt, The Rusty Knot, that I told you about a couple months ago.

I also blame my charming, historic neighborhood -- the South Street Seaport -- where anything salty and seaworthy earns instant style points (there's even a chic pet boutique called The Salty Paw, complete with anchor pull-toys and homemade fish-shaped biscuits).

Opening Ceremony for Screaming Mimi's Shorts

Seersucker shorts, $120, Opening Ceremony for Screaming Mimi's (available May 23rd exclusively at Screaming Mimi's seasonal shop in Montauk, Long Island and their Manhattan boutique)

And while I'm  scapegoating, I'll also call out The Sea Shell Shop in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, where I've been sucked in by (sometimes silly) seaside souvenirs since the age of two.   During my most recent visit, I scored a set of monkey's-fist rope coasters for about $6.

Bottega Veneta leather bracelet

A luxe twist on the classic sailor's bracelet
Bottega Veneta, $170 at Saks Fifth Avenue

My favorite interiors and lifestyle guru, Jonathan Adler, recently launched his Wauwinet collection tagged with the suggestion: "think beach grass, boat shoes, sand dunes, and cocktails at five."  At the top of my list is the Wauwinet mirror, which will look great above the small Heywood Wakefield dresser in my hallway.   I'm also coveting his new "ropes" wallpaper (top), which I would custom order in black and white to avoid an overtly preppy look.

Castaner platforms

Castaner slingback platform at Vivre, $325 (I especially love the black satin pair; the dressed-up fabric upper paired with the rugged rope heel is an unexpected -- and superchic -- contrast)

My rope-is-dope mentality is anything but new, yet I am especially excited because designers are wrapped up with it this season...

Silver and rope collection by Vellum

And, of course, that means there is boatloads of booty to buy.

The Maxi Has Moxie: My Favorite Trend Tweaked

Maxi dresses aren't a new phenomenon.  Not only do they hold a solid place in fashion history, but Nicole Richie made vintage and boho styles her uniform well over a year ago, pairing them with face-obscuring shades.  Angelina Jolie followed, selecting Rachel Pally sundresses as her latest pregnancy wardrobe essential.

The viability of floor-sweeping hemlines is still strong, yet while this summer's maxi maintains bohemian flair, it's lost its Kumbaya vibe in favor of sleek elegance (something to keep in mind when choosing your accessories; opt for rich gold jewelry and a blazer rather than a sloppy hobo bag and a head scarf).  Think rooftop party in Marrakesh rather than muddy feet at Woodstock.

Katie Holmes maximizes the maxi

Before heading to Miami last week I hit Henri Bendel's on Fifth Avenue in search of wardrobe options.  It wasn't until I stripped in the fitting room that I realized every piece I had pulled off the rack was a long day dress.  I tried on a strapless, ombre column; a bright silk skimmer from Alice & Olivia; and a Hawaiian-inspired floral number by Tracy Feith.  I ended up buying not one but two Diane von Furstenbergs, each with a totally different attitude:

Diane von Furstenberg: vintage print silk jersey halterDiane von Furstenberg: silk-nylon wrap

A slinky retro halter and a breezy multicolored wrap, which I didn't top off with a hat (sidenote: Molly Sims has been snapped wearing a similar dress).

Katrina Szish beats the Miami heat in a mimosa-yellow Diane von Furstenberg

The best part about these dresses is that with a speedy accessories switch they can go from brunch to a beach wedding -- both of which I have coming up on my calendar.

Cheers to the maxi dress!
